HPE dHCI

The vendor calls it: HPE disaggregated Hyperconverged Infrastructure vendorName: HPE disaggregated Hyperconverged Infrastructure

Scale separately like three tiers, manage like HCI. The update story is the real gain.

What it is

dHCI combines two approaches: the flexibility of a classic three-tier architecture, where storage, servers and network grow independently, and the vCenter-integrated management of a hyperconverged platform. All of it driven from the browser.

Compute is a ProLiant of your choice; storage is an HPE Alletra 6000.

Why it is worth it

The practical gain is the update. Through its link to HPE InfoSight, the compatibility checking before a system update goes away: server firmware, drivers, ESXi and the Alletra operating system are updated together in one controlled run.

Anyone who has checked a matrix of four version levels by hand knows how much work that is.

What it is for

Estates that want HCI’s simplicity but are not willing to buy compute and capacity in the same step. That is exactly where classic HCI gets expensive, because you buy one to get the other.

RAID controllers

If you have configured an HPE ProLiant server, you have almost certainly met a Smart Array or SmartRAID controller. Since Gen10 there is another option: the MegaRAID controllers.

Storage performance testing with vdbench

IOmeter is quick, but its data patterns do not suit a modern storage array. vdbench is the better tool, and this is how to configure it.

Storage performance testing with IOmeter

Every successful storage project ends with a storage performance test during system acceptance, checking the array, the storage area network and the hosts.

HPE VM Essentials – Part 2

Part 1 covered where VME stood in mid-February. A few weeks on, a fair amount has changed, and we built a three-node VME cluster in our lab.
