What it is
HPE groups quite different use cases under data management. Scalable storage with file services over CIFS and NFS for large volumes, plus object storage and compliant archiving of business-critical data.
Archiving gained weight with the revised Swiss data protection act, and that is not a technical question: what has to be kept, and for how long, is not decided by the platform.
How it gets built
Usually as software-defined storage: HPE server systems combined with third-party software. Through the HPE Complete programme that mostly means Scality, Cohesity, iTernity and Qumulo.
What to watch
The software choice decides more than the hardware choice. Object storage, classic NAS and archiving look similar on a datasheet and behave completely differently when you need data back. The question of how quickly something has to reappear belongs at the start.
