## What it is

HPE groups quite different use cases under data management. Scalable storage with file
services over CIFS and NFS for large volumes, plus object storage and compliant archiving of
business-critical data.

Archiving gained weight with the revised Swiss data protection act, and what has to be kept,
and for how long, is a legal question.

## How it gets built

Usually as software-defined storage: HPE server systems combined with third-party software.
Through the HPE Complete programme that mostly means Scality, Cohesity, iTernity and Qumulo.

## What to watch

The software is the deciding choice. Object storage, classic NAS and archiving look similar
on a datasheet and behave completely differently when you need data back. Before choosing,
settle how quickly data has to be available again.
