What it is
HPE Storage covers several product lines for primary and secondary storage. For virtualized estates, Alletra Storage is the current family, managed from HPE’s cloud console and shipping telemetry that flags anomalies before they become outages.
The three arrays HPE sells today
Alletra Storage MP B10000 is the mission-critical one: unified block and file, up to 5.8 PB raw in 2U. This is what sits under a virtualized estate.
Alletra Storage MP X10000 is object and file, up to 11.8 PB in the same 2U, and HPE aims it at AI, analytics and data protection.
Alletra Storage 5000 is the general-purpose hybrid array, up to 1.2 PB in 4U, for mixed primary and secondary workloads.
Older Alletra model numbers still turn up in quotes and in existing estates. HPE’s current family page no longer lists them.
What it is for
Estates where storage is its own layer rather than something inside the servers. That is the classic split and it has a good reason: compute and capacity do not grow at the same rate.
What to watch
A synchronously mirrored estate protects against losing a site and not at all against an attacker encrypting the data, because the damage replicates with everything else. Backup is therefore needed as well, and it is a separate project.
