ExaGrid: tiered backup storage

ExaGrid works exclusively on secure, fast backup storage appliances. The overriding goal is that your backup data is available whenever you need it. That is not only about storing the data safely; it is also about securing access to the appliance itself, and to the data, according to current cyber security thinking.

The appliances are built around tiered storage. The backup application (Veeam or Commvault, for example) writes backup data to the ExaGrid landing zone. The ExaGrid software then moves the data to a repository tier that is not visible from outside, which is where the data is safely held. Along the way it is compressed and deduplicated for very efficient use of capacity.

Who is ExaGrid?

ExaGrid has been delivering storage systems for backup data for more than 20 years. Head office is in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Something close to a rarity these days: worldwide in-house customer support. When an ExaGrid appliance is installed, you are assigned a system engineer who carries out the installation and implementation and stays your assigned engineer for the whole life of the device. They help with questions and problems, and run all ExaGrid software updates in agreement with you.

The ExaGrid backup appliances can be used scale-up or scale-out.

With scale-up, a single front-end controller handles the communication with the backup application. Additional ExaGrid appliances sit behind that controller and contribute their capacity to the backup storage. As data capacity grows, so does the backup window, because one front-end controller handles all the communication and the additional appliances only add capacity.

With scale-out, every additional ExaGrid appliance brings bandwidth and compute as well as capacity, which shortens the backup window. Each appliance adds performance along with capacity, so the backup window stays short even as the front-end data volume grows.
