summary: Broadcom retired the cheap hypervisor for desktops. Moving from Citrix to Horizon gets you vSphere Foundation with the Horizon licence.

Draft, not yet reviewed. We start with the licence arithmetic. What has to be shown is the number at the bottom of the renewal, and that needs your current Citrix and VMware contracts on the table first.

## What changed

Citrix on vSphere used to be affordable because of one licence: vSphere for Desktops. It
carried vCenter Server and vSphere Enterprise Plus, it was priced per user, and the Citrix
licences were bought on top of it.

Broadcom retired it. To keep running the platform you now buy vSphere Foundation or VMware
Cloud Foundation, both per core and both by subscription. For a desktop estate on the same
hypervisor, counting per core means a significant cost increase.

## The third option

Omnissa's Horizon editions include vSphere Foundation. Replace Citrix with Horizon and the
hypervisor, vCenter and vSAN come under the same licence.

Whether that comes out cheaper depends on how many users you have and on when the Citrix
contract ends.

## The proof of concept build

An Omnissa Connection Server, attached to the vCenter and the Active Directory you already
run. A Windows 11 master VM. An RDSH server if you publish applications rather than
desktops. A Unified Access Gateway for access from outside. An App Volumes server to
assign the applications.

The proof of concept tests the licence model and the migration plan.

## How it runs

Collect the licence information, produce a pre-calculation, and put the optimisation and a
migration scenario in front of you before anything is installed. Then the Horizon design as
a replacement for the Citrix platform, then the proof of concept, then a migration concept,
then the migration, then your acceptance.

You can stop before the proof of concept.
